Lot nr 313 Processional group: Chief accompanied by his entourage

Fon, Benin.
wooden plate with dark brown patina, 31 brass figures, in the centre the chief, with long pipe and beautiful blanket resting on a hammock, fixed to a long wooden bar supported by especially high towering figures, a courtier right by his side, the chief is flanked by four canopy bearers, a further figure with sunshade in front, accompanied by banner and horn carrying figures and diginitaries, figures supporting luggage or insignias of his royal dignity, such as stool and fan aside, figures with drum, horn and gong at the back of the procession; the figures are formed identical, with slender flat bodies and tube-like bent limbs, but exuberantly varied in changing postures and endowment; garments and hats, as well as planes (canopy tops) decorated with delicate incised ornaments, accentuated by kaolin rubbed into the deepenings; each figure screwed with the wooden plate, supported by four bowl-shaped feet, to the front supplied with a brass badge with the inscription: " ALLADA II OFFO"; the Kingdom of Dahomey, nowadays called Republic of Benin, was situated between Togo to the West and Nigeria to the East. According to an old legend it was created by the daughter of the King from Tado, who came to the forest in search for water and happened to meet the leopards spirit. From their alliance emanated Agasu, the ancestor of all Fon people. Agasus descendants founded the sacred city of "ALLADA"; for comparable object see Sotheby's New York, November 16, 2001, lot 88
